Alex Palou finally clinched victory on the streets of St. Petersburg, the stage for the opening round of the 2025 IndyCar season. After several unsuccessful attempts on this track, the reigning champion executed a flawless strategy with the Chip Ganassi team, climbing from eighth place to the top step of the podium.
The key to success was a well-managed race strategy: Palou extended his stints compared to his rivals, emerging ahead of Josef Newgarden and Scott Dixon after the final pit stop. However, the closing stages were anything but easy. Newgarden, a two-time series champion and Penske driver, closed the five-second gap but had to back off due to fuel management concerns. It was a bitter pill to swallow for the American driver, who had hoped to redeem himself after losing last year’s victory due to Penske’s disqualification over the push-to-pass controversy.
Dixon took advantage of the situation to secure a Ganassi one-two finish, once again demonstrating his consistency and skill. Meanwhile, pole-sitter Scott McLaughlin failed to convert his strong start into a podium finish, ultimately crossing the line in fourth place due to a suboptimal strategy. The New Zealander started on hard tires and switched to softs at the first pit stop, but the excessive degradation of the softer compound proved costly, taking him out of contention for the win.
The soft tires posed challenges for several drivers, prompting them to swap them out early following an incident in the opening laps. A collision between Will Power and Nolan Siegel, which also involved Louis Foster, triggered the safety car and impacted many teams' strategies.
Kyle Kirkwood secured fifth place, followed by Marcus Ericsson and Felix Rosenqvist, the latter struggling to capitalize on his strong third-place starting position. It was a tough day for Meyer Shank Racing, with Rosenqvist the only driver to reach the finish line, while Marcus Armstrong retired due to a left rear tire issue after his first pit stop, despite a promising start.
Christian Lundgaard finished eighth, ahead of Rinus VeeKay and Alexander Rossi, who rounded out the top ten. It was a race to forget for Colton Herta, whose race was derailed by a refueling issue that forced an extra pit stop, relegating him to 16th place.
Prema Racing had a learning experience in their debut, successfully bringing both cars home without incident. Callum Ilott and Robert Shwartzman finished 19th and 20th, respectively, as the last drivers on the lead lap. Among the retirements, rookie Louis Foster—Indy NXT’s 2024 champion—was forced out early after being caught up in the first-lap collisions.
